Who can volunteer with LVC?
Anyone with a professional skill or area of expertise that could help a library. That includes students, early-career and experienced professionals, and librarians who want to share what they know. You don't need to have worked in a library before.
What types of libraries can request volunteers?
Public, university, college, school, community and special libraries can all request support, as can organisations that run library services or reading programmes.
Can I volunteer remotely?
Yes. Much of the work, such as design, development, content and social media, can be done from anywhere. Some opportunities, like running programmes or supporting library services, may need you to be on site, and we'll make that clear before you're matched.
How does matching work?
The LVC team reviews every submission. We compare what each library needs with volunteers' skills, availability and stipend expectations, then introduce libraries and volunteers who are a good fit. It's done by people, not an algorithm.
How long does a volunteer placement last?
It depends on the library's needs and your availability. When you apply, you can choose 3 months, 6 months, 6–12 months, more than 12 months, or project by project. We use this to find a placement that fits.
Can libraries provide a stipend?
Yes. Libraries can tell us whether they're able to offer a stipend, and volunteers can tell us whether they expect one. A stipend isn't required to request a volunteer, but we take both answers into account when matching.
Can I volunteer on individual projects?
Yes. If you'd rather contribute to specific projects than commit to a fixed period, choose "Available on a project-by-project basis" when you tell us about your availability.
